Industrial hemp is a variety of the cannabis plant (Cannabis sativa) that contains 0.3% THC or less by dry weight. It looks similar to marijuana but has virtually no psychoactive compounds — it cannot make you high.
Hemp vs Marijuana — The Only Difference That Matters
The only legally meaningful difference between hemp and marijuana is THC content. Hemp contains 0.3% THC or less. Marijuana contains significantly higher THC levels (typically 5-30%). Under Ghana's L.I. 2475, only plants with THC at or below 0.3% can be legally licensed.
What Is Hemp Used For?
- Fibre: Strong bast fibres used for rope, canvas, clothing, and technical textiles
- Seeds: Complete protein source. Pressed into oil or eaten directly
- CBD: Female hemp flowers are rich in cannabidiol (CBD), used in medicines and wellness products
- Construction: Hemp hurd mixed with lime creates hempcrete, a carbon-negative building material
- Paper and Bioplastics: Hemp cellulose used for paper, biodegradable plastics, and biofuels
